    US Open Auslosung Männer

Rafa Nadal hat Anderson bis zu einen Finale von den Topgesetzten
Djokovic Federer sind in der unteren Hälfte.

    Rafael Nadal’s Quarter

Top seed and defending champ Nadal has never been one to shy away from a tough draw, but there must have been a collective sigh of relief amongst the Nadal camp upon learning that career-long rivals Federer and Djokovic both landed on the opposite side of the Mallorcan’s 2018 US Open draw.

Not that Nadal has an easy road. He’ll open against countryman and longtime Davis Cup teammate David Ferrer – a two-time semifinalist in Flushing Meadows (2007, 2012) – and could face American Jack Sock or Brit Kyle Edmund in the Round of 16. Beyond that lies a potential rematch of last year’s US Open final, this time in the quarters, as No. 5 seed Kevin Anderson also lurks in Nadal’s quadrant.

To get there, Anderson, a Wimbledon runner-up earlier this summer, would have to navigate the likes of Dominic Thiem, Denis Shapovalov and Andrey Rublev, or Americans Sam Querrey, Steve Johnson, Taylor Fritz and Ryan Harrison. After his run to the Toronto title, Nadal opted to sit out the Cincy Masters and arrives at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center rested and ready. That’s bad news for the opposition.

    Alexander Zverev’s Quarter

Sascha Zverev has done just about everything else but become a consistent second-week presence at the majors. In 2017, he downed Djokovic in Rome to become the youngest player since his vanquished opponent to win a Masters 1000 title in a decade. He subsequently bagged a second consecutive Masters 1000 trophy in Montreal, downing his childhood idol – Federer – in the process. His third Masters 1000 title came earlier this year in Madrid, where his serve was never broken and he didn’t drop a set.

But the 6-foot-6 wunderkind, ranked No. 4 in the world, has reached just one Slam quarterfinal (2018 Roland Garros) and is still finding his way at the sport’s Big Four events. “For some reason, he plays freer when he plays in the [Masters] 1000s and some of the smaller events than he does in the Slams,” said ESPN commentator Brad Gilbert this week. “He has to forget about the expectations and play the opponent on the other side of the net.”

Those early-round opponents could include 2014 finalist Kei Nishikori, Gael Monfils, David Goffin or Diego Schwartzman, with a potential quarterfinal matchup against 2014 champ and No. 7 seed Marin Cilic. The good news for Zverev is that he’s still young (21). There’s plenty of time for the German to make his mark at the Slams, and the 2018 US Open might just prove his coming-out party.

As Nadal said in May, “If he’s not playing well in Grand Slams in the next two years, you can come back to me and tell me, ‘You don’t know anything about tennis.’” (It’s safe to say the winner of 17 majors knows a thing or two about the game.)

    Roger Federer’s Quarter

If there was a worst-case scenario for the No. 2-seeded Federer – now a decade removed from his last US Open title – it was winding up in the same quarter as Djokovic, who only days ago dispatched him in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, in the Cincinnati final. But as fate would have it, that's just how it happened.

Djokovic’s return to the top of the sport has been downright miraculous when you look at just how far he had fallen over the past year and a half. Consider the Serb’s form at Indian Wells in March: having undergone elbow surgery at the beginning of the year, the two-time US Open champion (2011, 2015) looked so lost on the court that he was stunned by a No. 109-ranked qualifier, Japan’s Taro Daniel. Whether it was the physical setbacks or merely a spiritual walkabout, many wondered if one of the sport’s most dominant forces could ever regain his former machine-like form.

But Djokovic has sure silenced the critics. He captured his 13th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in July, downing Anderson, and was simply dominant against Federer in Ohio, arriving in Flushing Meadows as perhaps the tournament favorite. Federer’s path to a quarterfinal against Djokovic could include a mouthwatering third-round encounter with the enigmatic but wildly talented Nick Kyrgios, and a Round-of-16 head-to-head with #NextGen standout Hyeon Chung or Fabio Fognini, who already owns three titles on the year (Sao Paulo, Bastad, Los Cabos). Djokovic, meanwhile, is facing a possible third-rounder against Richard Gasquet, followed by Lucas Pouille or Pablo Carreno Busta.

    Damen Auslosung

Six-time US Open champion Serena Williams could be set for a prime-time third-round matchup with sister Venus, while defending champion Sloane Stephens could meet world No. 1 Simona Halep in the semifinals of the 2018 US Open.

Thursday’s draw also pitted world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki against former US Open champion Samantha Stosur in the opening round, with another champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova, drawn against Venus in Round 1.

Two-time Australian Open champion and wild card Victoria Azarenka will play Viktoria Kuzmova in her first match in New York City since 2015.

Only one all-American match is scheduled for the first round, with wild card and 2017 US Open girls' champion Amanda Anisimova set to play Taylor Townsend. The U.S. leads all nations with 19 women in the main draw, with the possibility of more coming through the US Open Qualifying Tournament.

Looking ahead to potential quarterfinals if all Top 8 seeds advance, world No. 1 Halep would play No. 8 Karolina Pliskova; No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki would meet fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova; No. 3 Sloane Stephens would face No. 7 Elina Svitolina; and No. 4 Angelique Kerber would play No. 6 Caroline Garcia.

    TOP HALF

    Simona Halep’s quarter

Halep opens her 2018 campaign against Kaia Kanepi of Estonia and could face No. 27 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in the third round. Halep’s quarter of the draw is stacked, with the Williams sisters, two-time Grand Slam singles champion Garbiñe Muguruza and former US Open finalist Pliskova all in the Romanian’s section.

Serena, seeded 17th in New York, begins against Magda Linette of Poland in the first round and would face either Carina Witthoeft of Germany or fellow American Caroline Dolehide in Round 2. Venus, meanwhile, could have one of the toughest first-round matches in the draw when she faces 2004 US Open champion and wild card Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia. Should Venus advance, she could face former junior world No. 1 Whitney Osuigwe of America in the second round.

Should the Williams sisters meet in the round of 32, it would be the 30th career match between the siblings and their sixth at Flushing Meadows. It would also be the second-earliest meeting at a major between the pair, after their first meeting in the second round of the Australian Open 20 years ago. Serena, who leads the matchup 17-12, is looking to tie Margaret Court's all-time Grand Slam title mark with her 24th major title.

Elsewhere among the other seeds in Halep’s quarter, No. 18 seed Ashleigh Barty will play a qualifier in Round 1, while No. 32 seed Maria Sakkari of Greece opens against another American wild card, Asia Muhammad.

Should Halep advance through the draw, she’d be in line to play Stephens in the semis.

    Angelique Kerber's quarter

The third round in world No. 4 and 2016 US Open champion Kerber’s section of the draw features a strong selection of exciting matches.

The German could be on track for a third-round match against No. 29 seed Dominika Cibulkova, while 2017 finalist and No. 14 seed Madison Keys could face Fed Cup teammate and 2017 semifinalist Coco Vandeweghe.

2006 US Open champion and five-time major winner Maria Sharapova could face No. 10 seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in the third round, with the winner of that match potentially meeting either world No. 6 Caroline Garcia of France or No. 30 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in the last 16.

Kerber begins her quest for the title against Margarita Gasparyan of Russia, while Garcia opens against two-time Grand Slam singles semifinalist and former world No. 4 Johanna Konta of Great Britain. Sharapova, Suarez Navarro and Cibulkova each have first-round matches against qualifiers, while Keys faces France’s Pauline Parmentier in a rematch of April's decisive Fed Cup rubber in Marseille.

In other first-round matches, Ostapenko plays fan favorite Andrea Petkovic of Germany, and Vandeweghe meets Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium. Ranked No. 33 in the world, Alize Cornet of France is the highest unseeded player in the draw. She plays Johanna Larsson of Sweden in the first round and could meet Kerber in the round of 64.
