Sprachen kann man lernen. Und wenn man damit aufwächst ist das auch keine Mühe.

Ich beneide die Leute die Mehrsprachig aufgewachsen sind.

@ raymond: If you want as much English-language TV as possible, then DVB-T (= terrestrial digital TV) is definitely the worst option for you. As mor has already said, original language broadcasting (either with or without subtitles) is quite uncommon in Germany, and the only English-language channel that's available in Essen via DVB-T is CNN International.

You should really try to get a digital satellite dish, preferably for both Astra 19.2°E (German channels) and 28.2°E (British channels). For more information click here

Another option would be cable TV with an additional subscription for digital channels. The main cable operator for the Essen area is called ish. The English-language channel package is called "tividi Global" but you can only get it on top of another basic package called "tividi Family". The monthly price for both of them is € 9,90.

There's another thing I forgot:

If you mean English subtitles: No.

If you mean German subtitles: Yes - public broadcasters ARD, ZDF, and their regional "daughter channels" (e.g. WDR for western Germany, NDR for the north, SWR for the south-west) offer quite a lot of subtitling for fictional programmes and news. These subtitles are transmitted via teletext. Although they're primarily aimed at people who are deaf or hard of hearing, they might be useful for you if you want to learn German.

The public channels are of course also available via DVB-T (see here for a complete list of channels).

Thank you very much for all the info. Now that I think of it, listening to german will propably be the wisest choice and try to learn the language.

Altho english subtitles would propably help .

Yeah, watching TV is often a good way of learning a language.

And German television is not that bad. If you're looking for some decent German-made fiction, avoid the commercial channels and watch out for "Tatort" crime films for example (don't know if you've already heard of them). There are new episodes on most Sunday evenings on ARD (the channel is now officially called "Das Erste") and frequent repeats on WDR, NDR, MDR, and SWR. And almost always they come with teletext subtitles.

Another great programme for learning the language (and one of the few enjoyable shows on RTL, the largest commercial station) is "Wer wird Millionär", the German version of "Who wants to be a millionaire". It's currently off air because of the summer break but it will return in September, normally on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at 20:15.
