Former NFL Star Pat McAfee Lands Daily Show on DAZN and Westwood One (Exclusive)

Former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee is finalizing a multiyear deal with DAZN and Westwood One Radio for a daily two-hour show set to begin Sept. 9.

The deal follows McAfee’s ESPN pact, announced July 29, to join the Thursday college football announcing team with Matt Hasselbeck (his former Colts teammate) and Adam Amin, and appear on ESPN morning show Get Up. Westwood One will launch The Pat McAfee Show in 40 markets initially, while McAfee will also broadcast his show live from DAZN’s marquis boxing and MMA cards and contribute to the streamer's nightly baseball show ChangeUp, which is hosted by erstwhile ESPN announced Adnan Virk.

McAfee also will create football-focused segments for DAZN Canada and Germany, where the streamer has NFL rights. Additionally, DAZN will begin video-streaming McAfee’s podcast, which will expand to three times each week....

NEW YORK (Aug. 7, 2019) – The moment has arrived. At long last, Pat McAfee, the former NFL All-Pro punter and budding sports media personality, will host his own daily show. DAZN will stream THE PAT MCAFEE SHOW from 10 a.m. to noon ET Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, Sept. 9. The announcement was made Wednesday by Jamie Horowitz, DAZN EVP of Content, North America.

“This is a dream come true for me and my boys. I am grateful and excited about the opportunity Westwood One and DAZN have afforded us,” said McAfee. “We can’t wait to get started and hopefully make the world a happier one. Cheers.”

“We’re incredibly lucky that Pat chose DAZN to join him for the next step in his rapidly evolving broadcasting career,” said Horowitz. “Pat is a unique voice in sports media with an avid following of fans, and we’re thrilled that Pat will be our first daily talk show in the U.S. and Canada.”

McAfee’s deal with DAZN extends well past the daily show. He will broadcast live from DAZN’s biggest boxing and MMA cards to provide onsite coverage of fight week. Additionally, McAfee will contribute to DAZN’s nightly baseball show ChangeUp and create weekly football-focused segments for DAZN Canada and DAZN Germany, where the streaming platform has the rights to NFL games.

McAfee will continue his work with other media brands including his wildly popular podcast, which will now be available in video form exclusively on DAZN.

NEW YORK (Sept. 19, 2019) – DAZN, the world’s largest sports streaming service, is now available to Comcast customers on Xfinity Flex and will be available over the Internet to millions more on Xfinity X1 this fall, marking DAZN’s first distribution deal with a major U.S. video and internet provider.

“We’re thrilled to give our Xfinity X1 and Xfinity Flex customers access to DAZN’s live and on-demand programming starting this fall just in time for some of the most highly anticipated events in sports this year,” said Daniel Spinosa, Vice President, Entertainment Services for Comcast Cable. “With new content from partners like DAZN, coupled with our aggregated UI, X1 is the best way to experience live sports at home, and with Flex we can extend this great content, integrated experience and voice control to our Internet-only customers directly on their TVs.”

As part of a new global initiative DAZN for Operators, DAZN now provides a turnkey opportunity for cable, satellite, mobile and internet providers to offer DAZN’s premium sports content as a major value add to their customers.

“DAZN for Operators is our new partnership program, in which we collaborate with the world’s leading pay TV operators, ISPs and mobile carriers to make the live sports experience even more accessible and better to watch for fans,” said Ben King, DAZN SVP, Global Distribution and Business Development. “We couldn’t think of a better inaugural partner than Comcast.”

Later this year, customers will be able to find DAZN’s content more deeply integrated within the X1 and Flex experiences, including direct access within the sports hub, the ultimate destination for all things sports on X1 and Flex, and the ability to call up a specific program with the Xfinity Voice Remote (“show me ChangeUp”). Flex is now included with an Xfinity Internet-only subscription, providing new and existing customers with the ability to easily access their favorite streaming services and manage their connected home devices right on the TV.

The launch coincides with DAZN’s blockbuster fall schedule of combat sports events. “Fight Season on DAZN” features:

Since its introduction to the U.S. market in September 2018, DAZN has continued to add to its content portfolio, which includes thousands of live and on-demand sporting and other events each year. DAZN today announced an agreement with Pluto TV

Meanwhile, DAZN today announced an agreement with Pluto TV, the free streaming service in USA, to deliver its 'DAZN Fight Zone', a three-hour weekly programming block featuring content from some of the biggest match-ups in combat sports.

Archived classic fights, DAZN-produced original shows and programming specials, open workouts, press conferences and official weigh-ins will feature on Pluto TV, which claims to have 18 million active monthly users.

Joseph Markowski, DAZN executive vice-president of North America, said: “By partnering with Pluto TV, we’re able to put DAZN content in front of the paywall which allows us to grow our brand and drive people to our key upcoming events. This fall, DAZN has the best schedule in boxing and we’ll be looking to send that message across as many channels as possible.”

Jeff Shultz, chief business officer at Pluto TV, added: “We have seen the demand for high-quality sports content grow over the years, and DAZN’s premier matchups in combat sports deliver to the standard expected from our audience.”

DAZN has built up its business in USA on the back of combat sports, notably an eight-year, $1-billion tie-up with UK promoter Matchroom Boxing, but has also made a play for the major leagues, in the shape of a three-year, $300-million deal with baseball's MLB that started this season and entails weeknight shows featuring live look-ins across various games taking place.

An annual pass costs $99.99, with a monthly subscription offered at $19.99.

Last month, DAZN struck its first distribution deal in USA, with Comcast, the media powerhouse.

The new Show “DAZN Fight Week” will premiere on Snapchat’s Discover page in the United States on Monday, Oct. 28, and new episodes will air every day in the week leading up to Canelo Alvarez’s Nov. 2 fight – which will see the middleweight king jump two weight classes to challenge Sergey Kovalev for his WBO Light Heavyweight belt. Episodes will include Canelo’s career highlights as well as cutdown versions of 40 DAYS: CANELO VS. KOVALEV – the latest installment of DAZN’s behind-the-scenes fight prep docuseries that is executive produced by LeBron James, Maverick Carter, and Carlos Vela.

NEW YORK – November 11, 2019 – SiriusXM and DAZN announced today that they are teaming up to launch a new national daily boxing show that will deliver an engaging look at the world of the “sweet science.”

The Ak and Barak Show will make its debut on the SiriusXM Fight Nation channel today, Monday, November 11 (12:00-3:00 pm ET/9:00 am-noon PT), featuring DAZN personalities Akin “Ak” Reyes and Barak Bess. Ak and Barak will host the show live every weekday (Noon ET/9:00 am PT) on SiriusXM Fight Nation, providing their unique perspective on the headline stories and trending topics from around boxing, and interviewing many of the biggest names and colorful personalities in and around the sport. Boxing fans nationwide can call into the live show each day to share their thoughts.

DAZN, the New York-based global subscription streaming service, has sidelined its live-events team until early July due to the coronavirus pandemic, multiple sources have told The Athletic. The company will provide its furloughed employees 50 percent pay and full medical benefits, according to multiple boxing officials familiar with the move.

The decision will affect boxing, its top property in the U.S., as well as soccer internationally. Many top boxers, including four-division champion Canelo Alvarez, long-reigning middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin and elite young fighters Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney, are under contract to fight on DAZN.

“They’re a live-sports streaming company and right now there are no live sports to stream,” said a boxing official familiar with DAZN’s thinking. “In aggregate, there is less work to do across the platform, so they’ve made the difficult decision to temporarily furlough staff in an effort to conserve...

Major League Wrestling (MLW) inks streaming deal with DAZN in United States

MLW President Court Bauer has been teasing a big distribution deal for his promotion over the last few months.

On Tuesday, it was reported by Dave Meltzer and Josh Nason of F4Wonline that Major League Wrestling has signed a deal with the United States version of DAZN.

Per the report, there’s no word yet on the details of the deal – length and financials. It should be noted that MLW has been available in some international markets via DAZN in the past.

Also, MLW will continue to air their flagship show, Fusion, on beIN Sports every Saturday and for the time being, on YouTube as well.

MLW will be part of DAZN’s regular weekly schedule as future live shows will air on DAZN in the United States. The streaming service uploaded several episodes of MLW Fusion and their recent Opera Cup event on Tuesday.

PWinsider.com reports that MLW had been in discussions with ESPN about potentially bringing programming to some of ESPN’s platforms since early 2020. However, talks slowed once ESPN started to air previous WrestleMania events.

This marks the first pro wrestling promotion to air shows on the American version of DAZN. MLW now joins other sports leagues on the streaming service in the United States. It should be noted that DAZN did a deal with WWE back in 2017 to air Raw, SmackDown, and other programming for Japanese audiences.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, MLW has had to postpone several of their events. Currently, the promotion has scheduled its next set of TV tapings for October in Dallas, TX.

“We want you to go and when you experience MLW you have true suspension of disbelief,” Bauer said in a phone interview. “You feel like this is a combat sport like MMA or other sports, just something weird that doesn’t happen in [those] other sports may happen here.”

The deal with DAZN is part of a larger media-rights strategy Bauer has been able to focus on with the company’s live shows on hold since March 13 in Mexico because of a coronavirus pandemic. MLW can currently be seen in 20 countries and Bauer said he ambitiously hopes to add 20-30 more by the end of the year. It’s those media rights deals that have allowed MLW to pay the bills and re-sign talent even while shows are not going on.

“We are in a unique position where we’ve been able to just kind of come into port and weather the storm and I think because of what we’re doing in the meantime [we’ll] reemerge as a winner because we’ve shifted all of our bandwidth to focusing on media rights deals, new talent, restructuring talent contracts and growing our global footprint,” said Bauer, a former writer for WWE.

MLW’s deal with DAZN — which has eight million subscribers worldwide — doesn’t mean all of its content will be moving there. The New Rochelle-based company’s weekly show, “MLW Fusion” will continue to air on television partner beIN Sports. Replays of that show can currently be seen on DAZN along with it’s Opera Cup pay-per-view.

Bauer said he was unable to go into detail at this time about what specific MLW shows would be coming to DAZN, but described the offering as “premium” and content that’s “complementary” to Fusion. MLW did not have an exclusive pay-per-view partner when live events went on hold.

“There is more, stay tuned,” Bauer said.

One thing he does plan on changing is where fans can watch MLW content for free. It would mean moving content from YouTube to a different paywall-free video service that would offer the company a better revenue stream. MLW currently has nearly 95,000 YouTube subscribers. It has a roster filled with young stars such as Brian Pillman Jr., Davey Boy Smith Jr., and heavyweight champion Jacob Fatu.

“There’s always going to be content on YouTube, but as soon as I can move it to another service that’s easily accessible that you don’t have to pay to watch, we’re gonna make that move,” Bauer said. “YouTube grossly underpays unless you have a strategic partnership, which we attempted to have.

“You get to the point where you know the value of your property, you know that this is now a very temporary thing, but you also never want your audience to be disrupted from watching it because they’ve gotten do use to something like this.”

Bauer said MLW is under no pressure from its broadcast partners — for whom they are still producing new content for — to resume traditional shows. He is unsure when those will begin again. MLW plans to follow states’ coronavirus guidelines when they do. Bauer isn’t in a rush to have MLW shows return.

“Until there is some sort of therapy, treatment, and or a vaccine, we’re just gonna standby,” he said.

He said if he was doing fanless shows, he’d present matches with lighting similar to the movies “Cinderella Man” or “Raging Bull” where the crowd is more blacked out and the action in the ring has a limelight on it from above.

Until then, Bauer’s focus is on having as many potential eyeballs ready to see MLW when it does return and he views the deal with DAZN as a big part of that.

“As we try to grow or global footprint, that really helps accelerate that for us,” Bauer said. “It really strategically fit like a glove for us.”

DAZN Cancels MLB Whiparound Show “ChangeUp”

DAZN will no longer air their MLB Whiparound show “ChangeUp,” which was hosted by Adnan Virk and Scott Rogowsky, The Streamable has learned. The show, which launched ahead of the 2019 MLB season, was a live look-in show most similar to the NFL RedZone channel.

A DAZN spokesperson declined to comment.

At the time, DAZN had reached a three-year, $300 million deal to bring the live show every weeknight, switching between major moments in games. The show was produced by MLB Network, which has their own similar channel called MLB Network Strike Zone.

The pandemic has hit DAZN particularly hard due to lack of live sports. The company has reportedly been deferring rights fee payments, while placing employees on furlough.

Part of the decision to add the show originally, was the lack of available pro sports rights in the U.S.

At the time, DAZN Chairman, John Skipper had said that their needs to be other content and the service needs to become “be a multi-sports aggregator.”

Until this deal, the service has focused on boxing and MMA rights in the U.S. DAZN which launched in the U.S. in September offers 80+ fights a year from Matchroom USA, Bellator, Golden Boy Promotions, World Boxing Super Series and Combate Americas.

Most recently, the streaming service reached a deal with Major League Wrestling.

In November 2019, DAZN reportedly hit 8 million users, with 90 percent of those coming from outside the U.S. In comparison ESPN+, which reached 7.9 million paid subscribers this past quarter, but all of their audience is the U.S.
