DAZN TO STREAM THE EPREMIER LEAGUE IN THREE MARKETS

• DAZN has acquired media rights to stream the newly launched ePremier League Invitational (ePL) in Canada, Japan and Spain
• Organised by the Premier League, the eSports tournament will feature players representing major clubs

DAZN, the live and on-demand sport streaming service, has acquired the media rights to the inaugural ePremier League Invitational tournament for three of its markets – Canada, Japan and Spain.

The eSports league from the Premier League begins on 21 April with the final played on 25 April. Every day, the tournament will star professional players representing their clubs in a knock-out competition playing EA SPORTS FIFA 20.

Contestants include Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Todd Cantwell (Norwich City), Ryan Fredericks (West Ham United), Diogo Jota (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) and Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace).

The ePL is the first time the Premier League has organized its own eSports tournament. The prize fund will be donated to the #PlayersTogether initiative, which was created by Premier League players as a way of generating funds for the NHS.

DAZN acquires rights for Nippon Professional Baseball pre-season

Sports streaming service DAZN has acquired rights in Japan for Nippon Professional Baseball pre-season practice matches ahead of the 2020 season start on June 19.

DAZN will show live coverage of four to six pre-season matches each practice match day, starting on June 2 and running until June 16.

The OTT platform’s rights cover the home matches for the 11 NPB teams that it also has deals with for regular-season matches. NPB teams sell their media rights individually, rather than as a collective. The Hiroshima Toyo Carp is the only NPB team DAZN does not hold rights for.

Pre-season matches are usually included in DAZN’s main rights deals with the teams, but this summer’s matches were not due to the extraordinary schedule imposed by the Covid-19 shutdown.

As well as DAZN, the NPB teams also have media rights deals with Japanese pay-television and free-to-air broadcasters. Some of these broadcasters may also show pre-season matches.

DAZN will also be showing on-demand content including a ‘DAZN Diaries’ interview with Yomiuri Giants head coach Tatsunori Hara, a documentary series focusing on the Yomiuri Giants, and baseball-themed anime videos.

LONDON, 5 June 2020 – DAZN, the global sports streaming service, announced today that it will show all 92 Premier League matches live and exclusively in Canada, Japan and Spain when the 2019/20 season resumes on Wednesday 17 June.

This comes as the Premier League today publishes details of the revised fixtures for the 2019/20 season. Aston Villa will host Sheffield United on that date, while Manchester City will welcome Arsenal. The rest of the top-flight will be in action once again over the weekend of 19-21 June.

DAZN has the exclusive live media rights for coverage of the Premier League in Canada, Japan and Spain for the three seasons between 2019 and 2022.

In Brazil, DAZN will continue to show two Premier League matches a week, as part of a separate sub-licencing agreement.

TOKYO & LONDON, 25 June 2020 – DAZN, the global sports streaming service today announced a partnership with a leading association for cable TV industry, Japan Cable and Telecommunications Association (JCTA), to bring DAZN to millions of cable TV households in Japan.

Subscribers of participating cable TV partners will now be able to add a DAZN subscription to their monthly cable TV bill without the need to register a credit card or other payment information and then watch their favourite sports via the DAZN app on their set top box. The service will be available on 10 cable TV providers in the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Shinetsu, Tokai, Sanyou, Sanin areas by July 2020, and it will expand to more than 50 companies by the end of this year.

This is the latest in a series of recent partnerships with leading telecoms and pay TV partners in Japan aimed at making live sport more accessible to fans than ever before. In December, DAZN launched on the new J:COM LINK set top box, allowing customers of the largest cable company in Japan to sign up and pay via the J:COM bill for the first time.

DAZN has also rolled-out ‘Direct Carrier Billing’ with Japan’s leading telecommunication companies KDDI and Softbank. Subscribers of Softbank, Y!Mobile, au, UQ Mobile can now register quickly and easily by paying for DAZN on their mobile phone bill. NTT docomo user continue to be able to enjoy DAZN via the DAZN for docomo service.

These initiatives form part of the DAZN for Operators program, through which DAZN collaborates with TV and telecoms operators to provide improved streaming experiences for sports fans and generate new revenue streams and value for partners.

Live sports have now re-started on DAZN, including Nippon Professional Baseball, Premier League, Serie A and LaLiga. The J League restarts on 4 July and the Formula 1 season gets going with the Austrian Grand Prix on 5 July.

Tokyo & London, 25 August 2020 – DAZN and the J.League today announced a two-year extension to their existing 10-year partnership until 2028 with a transformational agreement that redefines the traditional sports rights model.

The agreement pioneers a profit-sharing model that enables the J.League to reap the rewards of DAZN’s ongoing growth in Japan whilst reducing DAZN’s fixed annual fees to the league throughout the extended term. The deal is inspired by the maturation of the commercial model between music labels and online music streaming services and, as seen for a number of years in the music industry, benefits all parties involved.

DAZN believes this partnership-led structure is the key model for future rights and content relationships, as it rewards mutual growth and innovation, whilst encouraging both parties to continue investing in Japanese domestic football. The new partnership is an evolution from traditional, legacy models that are based solely on fixed license fees.

James Rushton, Acting CEO at DAZN Group, said: “This new agreement with the J.League brings us closer together through an innovative and deeper partnership that re-imagines what a modern, fit-for-purpose rights deal should look like.”

The announcement comes as DAZN prepares for the next phase of growth, with a renewed focus on original launch markets and ahead of the global roll-out of the sports streaming service to more than 200 countries and territories later this year.

“Our new rights strategy is part of our fresh approach that sets us and our partners up for success in a world post Covid-19. Another key part is the development of our live and original content mix that will enable us to continue to build our platform in core markets as the go-to global sports destination.” Rushton added.
