    High School Musical

It's slight on plot and totally predictable, yet this slickly packaged musical comedy from Dirty Dancing choreographer Kenny Ortega certainly ticks all the right boxes for its target pre-teen audience. Not only are leads Zac Efron (Hairspray) and Vanessa Anne Hudgens (Thunderbirds) an attractive partnership, but their blossoming romance - bookish Hudgens transfers to the star basketball player's high school - is charmingly sweet and full of positive life lessons. Central to these is the importance of resisting peer group pressure, as the duo encounter classmate resistance when they decide to audition for the school musical together. Adults may be bewildered by the film's runaway success, however for youngsters the catchy songs, gentle humour and overall vibrancy are likely to prove an irresistible combination. [Rating 3*]

    Toy Story 2

Originally intended as a 60-minute, straight-to-video project, this was a work in progress right up to its release - complete with last-minute additions to the cast. Product opportunism, perhaps. Yet who can be wholly cynical about a film that not only manages to surpass its predecessor, but also restores credibility to that much debased term "family entertainment"? Buzz Lightyear's bid to rescue Woody the cowboy from the clutches of a sleazy toy collector will keep the youngsters on the edge of their seats. However, it's the little touches that will delight the grown-ups, most notably the in-jokes at the expense of Star Wars and Jurassic Park, and the charming re-creation of a 1950s TV puppet show. This is nigh-on perfect. [Rating 5*]

    Shrek the Halls

Festive animated comedy. Having left his festive plans to the last minute, Shrek faces a mad dash to create the perfect first Christmas for the baby ogres. However, it is also Shrek's first Christmas and events spiral out of his control when Donkey and the others descend on his hovel to join the fun. A chaotic party ensues, leaving Shrek to learn the true meaning of Christmas the hard way.

    Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special

The hit sitcom returns for a festive special as Nessa and the Wests head east, with some help from Dave and his coach. Meanwhile in Essex, Dawn and Pete visit for drinks, Mick is preoccupied with his new love, and Smithy cannot wait to spend his first Christmas with Neil the Baby. Pam has prepared a lovely spread and Bryn has his mistletoe ready, but as the bubbly starts flowing and the Christmas spirit gets a grip, Gavin and Stacey have a startling announcement to make.

    Carols from King's

A celebration of Christmas from the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge. The simple story of the Nativity is told in the familiar words of the King James Bible, and in poetry by Henry Vaughan, John Milton and TS Eliot. The famous chapel choir sings carols old and new, including the Sussex Carol, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, In the Bleak Midwinter, the Three Kings, Lux Aurumque - by the modern American composer Eric Whitacre - and O Come All Ye Faithful.

    Calendar Girls

Comparisons were made between this true story of the world-famous Women's Institute nude calendar and The Full Monty. Though both revolve around a group of ordinary folk reluctantly taking their clothes off (and both made money in America), Nigel Cole's film is actually less broad in its comedy and much gentler in tone. It is the very genteel nature of the North Yorkshire WI milieu that provides the film with its "high concept" (middle-aged women strip for charity). While the pivotal shooting of the calendar itself provides comic gold (during which the spare-part husbands gather in the pub like expectant fathers - a lovely touch), there is a moving, fallible humanity to the performances that keeps the whole thing the right side of farce. Julie Walters, Helen Mirren and Linda Bassett shine in a spotless cast of "ladies of a certain age" and, though a climactic trip to America creates an unnecessarily showy finale, this is prime British fare - not to mention a rare celebration of flesh untouched by cosmetic surgery. Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Claymation heroes Wallace and Gromit make their feature-length debut in this delightful comedy adventure. Bursting with wit and imagination, it takes Aardman Animations' Oscar-winning short film format to new levels of technical genius. The enterprising inventor (voiced, as ever, by veteran actor Peter Sallis) and his faithful dog cash in on the approaching Giant Vegetable Competition by offering a humane pest-control service to rid the neighbourhood of rabbits. However, business is jeopardised when a mysterious monster begins destroying local gardens, forcing the pals into a frantic race to catch the veg-ravaging terror. Despite being peppered slightly too heavily with modern innuendo, the tale retains its charm, gaining plenty of comic mileage from its quaint depiction of northern life. Working-class Wallace's rivalry with trigger-happy toff Victor (voiced by Ralph Fiennes) is especially amusing, and there are some great references to classic horror movies. But it's facially expressive Gromit who steals the show, causing genuine hilarity without uttering a single word. [Rating 4*]

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

The franchise holders took a real risk by handing this third Harry Potter film to a Mexican director who's best known for the smart, sexy but low-budget road movie Y Tu Mamá También and, more telling, the Oscar-nominated A Little Princess. But the decision has paid dividends. Alfonso Cuarón brings a darker, edgier, scarier feel to this instalment, which has boy wizard Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) contending not only with Gary Oldman's escaped convict, but also with the difficulties of becoming a teenager. But there's still plenty of fun to be had, with ghosts, ghouls and gadgets galore, the most striking gizmo being a shape-shifting triple-decker bus that, were it real, would solve London's traffic congestion at a stroke. David Thewlis, Emma Thompson and Timothy Spall join the list of cameoing celebrities, while the young leads are all growing into their roles. The film has the odd dull patch, and there are scenes weighed down by too much plot, but, by and large, this adventure is on a par with its predecessors, and, in many respects, is even better. Potter fans will not be disappointed. [Rating 4*]

While not in the league of Shrek, this offering from DreamWorks Animation is serviceable family entertainment. Chris Rock and Ben Stiller provide the voices for Marty the zebra and Alex, a preening lion, who enjoy a comfortable existence in Manhattan's Central Park Zoo until Marty expresses a desire to return to the wild. What follows is a predictable but engaging series of mishaps that land the pair in Africa, along with neurotic giraffe Melman (David Schwimmer) and no-nonsense hippo Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith). The pace drags a bit in the last third of the movie and the attempts to infuse Marty and Alex's relationship with pathos are just too half-hearted and curiously uninvolving. But the film is always marvellous to look at and the sight gags come thick and fast. Among the highlights are Sacha Baron Cohen (TV's Ali G) as the funky but quite mad King of the Lemurs and a pair of posh British monkeys who propose a unique form of literary criticism. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Shrek director Andrew Adamson switches to live-action movies with this ambitious adaptation of the best-known book in CS Lewis's seven-volume Narnia series. Years in the making, it's an old-fashioned fantasy adventure that retains much of the magical allure of the popular children's classic. The four Pevensie siblings are evacuated from London to a country manor house during the Second World War. There they discover an enchanted wardrobe that leads to a wintry, fairy-tale realm populated by talking animals and mythical creatures. Narnia has fallen under the malevolent spell of Tilda Swinton's imperious White Witch - setting the scene for a climactic battle between good and evil. With its focus on character relationships rather than flashy spectacle, the film is perhaps more intimate and low-key than many modern youngsters are used to. However, aside from some midway plot lulls, there's plenty to delight here, from the imposing landscapes to the noble, CGI-realised hero Aslan the Lion, majestically voiced by Liam Neeson. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Johnny Depp's lovable rogue Jack Sparrow returns for more swashbuckling high jinks in this frenetic yet overlong follow-up to the massive 2003 box-office hit Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl. Only this time, it's not just Sparrow's neck that's in danger but his very soul, as cunning undead captain Davy Jones (a squid-faced Bill Nighy) and his supernatural crew emerge from the ocean depths to recover the ultimate unpaid debt. There's scarcely a moment to catch your breath as the film-makers unleash an exhausting avalanche of visual thrills, incorporating everything from angry cannibals and a fabulous sea monster to a crowd-pleasing snog between Sparrow and Keira Knightley's fiery Elizabeth Swann. Never mind that the narrative is meandering and unnecessarily complex or that Orlando Bloom is as uncharismatic as ever, it's the elaborate set pieces and frequently dazzling CGI that make this sequel such no-brainer fun.
