- am 24. - 25. Juni beginnt der NHL Entry Draft 2016, der diesmal im First Niagara Center von Buffalo, New York ausgetragen wird
- der Start der 100th NHL Saison beginnt am 12. Oktober (Toronto@Ottawa, St. Louis@Chicago, Calgary@Edmonton & Los Angeles@San Jose)
- am 29. Januar 2017 findet das 62nd National Hockey League All-Star Game in Los Angeles, Kalifornien (Staples Center) statt
- das Ende der regulären Saison ist der 9. April
- der Start der Stanley Cup Playoffs beginnt am 12. April und endet Mitte Juni

23. Oktober 2016, Heritage Classic @Investors Group Field: Winnipeg Jets vs. Edmonton Oilers
1. Januar 2017, Centennial Classic @BMO Field: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Detroit Red Wings

Arena Wechsel
- die Edmonton Oilers ziehen ebenfalls in eine neue Arena (Rogers Place, 18.641 Zuschauer) und weihen diese mit dem Start der Saison am 12. Oktober gegen den Erzrivalen Calgary Flames ein

Expansion Team
- mit der Saison 2017/18 wird fortan auch das 31. NHL-Team an den Start gehen. Das neue Team kommt aus Las Vegas und wird seine Heimspiele fortan in der 17.368 Zuschauer umfassenden T-Mobile Arena austragen
