WBD’s JB Perrette outlines Max’s global roll-out strategy

Warner Bros Discovery (WBD)’s streaming chief JB Perrette has outlined how the company is approaching the global roll-out of Max, admitting that partnerships will beat a rigid direct-to-consumer approach in some markets.

Similar output arrangements for HBO shows, particularly in Europe where Sky has held exclusive rights for more than a decade, are being closely scrutinised as WBD explores when and where to launch Max.

WBD’s UK chief, Andrew Georgiou, last week said that the “eventual” launch of Max in the UK had been part of the rationale behind the creation of TNT Sports in the country.

Perrette added that if Max could secure profitability, market share and scale, then it would look to expand but if not, partnerships and “other ways to go to market” would be explored.

A roll-out of Max, and its forerunner HBO Max, in the UK has not yet occurred partly because Sky has an extensive output deal with HBO that runs until 2025.

The exec, speaking at the RTS Cambridge Convention, continued: “The opportunity to work with BT to combine their existing entertainment and sports portfolio in advance of the eventual launch of Max in this market was something that strategically we wanted to do.

“It gave us a fuller, more premium content portfolio and that is a journey we will undertake through 2025/26 in partnership with Sky and ahead of launching Max eventually.”

Georgiou’s comments came after Sky CEO Dana Strong said she was “optimistic” of extending the HBO overall deal with WBD, which provides the pay TV operator with shows including White Lotus, Succession and House Of The Dragon.

WBD is already preparing to launch Max, the rebranded version of HBO Max that launched in the US earlier this year, across Latin America in the coming months, with a broader expansion into 2024.

There has, however, been no confirmation over how or if the streamer will be rolled out into Sky territories such as the UK, Germany or Italy, with HBO content at present tied up as part of the Sky pact.

Warner Bros Discovery’s head of streaming says the broadcasting giant expects to launch its Max platform locally in 2025, putting at risk one of the most lucrative pipelines of content for Foxtel and its Binge platform.

Mr Perrette told the Media Partners Asia APOS event that Warner Bros Discovery would “probably look to launch in a market like Australia after that”. “Australia’s a critically important market for us, where again we think our content is very strong for that market.” he added.

Nachdem der Rebrandingplan von Ende '23 ins Q1 '24 verschoben wurde ist nun offiziell, dass im Februar 2024 (Tag unbekannt) HBO Max in Lateinamerika zu Max wird.
