Dänemark

Die Analogabschaltung in Dänemark ist erfolgt und das erweiterte digitale Angebot aufgeschaltet. Es gibt jetzt zwei freie und über die Boxer-Plattform drei verschlüsselte Multiplexe. Drei Programme aus Nachbarländern werden laut DigiTAG unverschlüsselt über Boxer ausgestrahlt. [Der letzte Satz ist eine Falschmeldung, siehe #48.]

Denmark - Launch of new DTT services

Following the completion of analogue switch-off on 1 November, new services have been made available to viewers on the DTT platform.

Viewers can access services from five multiplexes:
- Multiplex 1 offers DR1, DR2, TV2 as well as non-commercial local television.
- Multiplex 2 offers an HD service, DR HD, the children's service DR Ramasjang, the culture service DR K, the news service DR Update, and the parliamentary service Folketinget.

The remaining three multiplexes are operated by Boxer and offer 31 pay services and 3 free-to-air services (TV4 Sverige, TV2 Norge and ARD).

Apart from the first multiplex which uses the MPEG-2 compression format, the four remaining multiplexes using MPEG-4 AVC.

Daraus ergibt sich eine kleine Kuriosität Das Erste aus Deutschland ist über den Sender Flensburg-Fuchsberg 2 Mal empfangbar
und zwar regulär auf K47 unverschlüsselt im NDR Mux und verschlüsselt mit Kennung ARD und dänischem EPG in einem der Boxer Multiplexe

2010: Analogabschaltung in Lettland

Die zwei wichtigsten Sender LTV1 (ÖR) und LNT (privat) haben sich mit Lattelecom auf eine Abschaltung in zwei Stufen geeinigt, am 1. April in Riga und Umgebung sowie am 1. Juni im Rest des Landes.

Mit im Bund sind der zweite ÖR-Sender LTV7, der am 1. März abschaltet und der Privatsender TV5, der bereits seit Dezember voll digital ist. Wann TV3 analog abschaltet, ist noch offen.

Pläne für HD via DVB-T2

Schweden: Regulierungsbehörde RTVV hat eine Umfrage zur Einführung von terrestrischem HDTV gestartet. Über ein Drittel der schwedischen Fernsehzuschauer empfängt terrestrisch.

Sweden’s regulatory authority, Radio- och TV-verket (RTVV), has launched a consultation into the use of DVB-T2 and HDTV over the country’s terrestrial network.

The results of the consultation, running through to February 19, will serve as the central plank for the licensing of further channels during 2010.

The Authority is generally favourable towards the introduction of HD services, but says DVB-T2 should be introduced on a gradual basis. In a statement the RTVV said that the terrestrial network should along with other platforms offer the services demanded by customers.

“It’s about giving the terrestrial network to meet consumer demand,” said Magnus Larsson, director-general, RTVV. “Today over a third of Swedish viewers are watching via the terrestrial network. DTT should be given the chance to develop and HDTV is one of the services that is evolving.”

Separately, the RTVV has welcomed the deployment of the country’s seventh (and delayed) terrestrial multiplex.

Finnland: Testübertragung im Süden des Landes während der olympischen Winterspiele. Zwei Multiplexe (via VHF) mit je 4 Programmen in Planung. Der offizielle Start soll im Herbst 2010 mit 40% Abdeckung der Bevölkerung erfolgen. Weitgehend Pay-TV, ein Programm frei.

HD DVB-T2 test transmissions will start in the southern part of Finland next week during the Vancouver Olympics. The country will also award licences to content providers for two HD DVB-T2 MPEG-4 multiplexes sometime this month.

According to Tauno Äijälä, counsellor of communications, senior advisor DTT Helpdesk, there have been a total of 17 applications for the eight channels, occupying 10 Mbps each, on the two multiplexes. A telco named DNA has already been awarded a licence to operate the two multiplexes, which will use VHF frequencies freed up from analogue TV.

The multiplexes should launch this autumn and will initially reach 40% of the population, rising to 60% next year.

Äijälä adds that Finland is likely to have 16 HD channels in four years time, with all but one or two being paid-for services.

The DNA transmissions during 'der olympischen Winterspiele' will use the VHF band. It will however use the DVB-T1/MPEG-4 standard

DNA has got special permission to use DVB-T1 from the few transmitters otherwise testing in Lahti and Helsinki, as no DVB-T2 receivers are yet on the market.

DNA has the license for two HD DVB-T2 VHF band III muxes- HD1 and HD2. The picture below shows the expected coverage (3 phases red, black and blue (end 2011))

Applications for operating two additional DVB-T2 muxes are currently evaluated in the ministry. These two muxes will use UHF - one regional HD3 and one - mux F - country-wide SD and/or HD.

The two new DVB-T2/MPEG-4 HD multiplexes in Sweden - mux6 and mux7 - will start November 1. with 16 transmitters sites. An additional 17 sites will follow December 16 and more in 2011.
Mux6 will use UHF channels in all of Sweden, while mux7 will use VHF band III in border areas where UHF channels are not available.

A total of 9 HD channels are licensed by the Government and the "Radio- och TV-verket" (6 will start November 1.)

At least two channels - the public service channels SVT1-HD and SVT2-HD - will be FTA.

Finnland

The Digita Oy DVB-H mux in Nokia-land will be closed and replaced by a DVB-T2 mux. It is possible that part of the capacity will be used for a very robust DVB-T2 Lite signal, which can be received by new mobile devices.

This is the final blow to the DVB-H standard. I much deserved blow - IMHO.

The history and the technical/economical/commercial history of DVB-H should be analysed. It seems to me that the 'supply side' - including the EU commission - wanted something to sell and did not want to realize, that the DVB-H standard was developed as a 'quick and dirty' solution to a market that never was.

Why the hell did such a product ever got into an EU recommendation without first being flocked by the 'devils advocate'?
Where were the consumers requests for such solutions ?

The FTA channel SVT2-HD which were until now broadcast on se-mux7 (in many places on VHF band III) will on February 21 be move to the all UHF se-mux6, where SVT1-HD has been since the start of DVB-T2 in Sweden. This means that VHF band III is only used for 3 pay-tv HD channels from February 21 (one more HD channel is not currently broadcasting).

As the frequency allocation for se-mux6 follows the TV regions in Sweden, it will now be possible for five HD channels to broadcast local/regional programs (FTA: SVT1-HD + SVT2-HD, pay: TV3-HD, TV4-HD and 5-HD)

Take a look at the frontpage of this PDF - SE-MUX7 is using VHF band III. It will have above 90% coverage this summer.

I think all or almost all SE-MUX7 VHF transmitters have been put into operation in Sweden.
